The Cosmos
Concerto for Wind Quintet and Orchestra
US Premier in 2016

Listen to movements I, II, and V in a live performance described by Fred Child as
"An orchestra with orbiting wind players" in Hour 2.
Commissioned to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The Planets by Gustav Holst, The Cosmos explores features of the universe in our solar system and beyond.
Composer, Michael Gilbertson, explores time and space with an adventurous new piece that requires the quintet soloists to be fully memorized while playing from within the audience and orchestra. Including moments of radial and antiphonal staging by WindSync, the concerto is an immersive experience that explores new sounds to depict the chaos and beauty of our known and unknown universe. Each of the concerto's five movements is inspired by a different element of the cosmos. The opening movement, Nebula, depicts the clouds of dust, gas, and light that combine to form stars. The second movement captures the circuitous orbit of a comet, growing louder and more brilliant it draws near. The third and fourth movements are inspired by the bursts of radiation released by solar flares and the mysterious force of dark matter. The final movement, Fusion, depicts the release of atomic energy that powers stars throughout the universe.
The Cosmos: Concerto for Wind Quintet and Orchestra was commissioned in partnership by the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, Concert Artists Guild, and WindSync in 2016.
