Imagination in Music
- a mini school residency that provides creativity
A WindSync "Imagination in Music" residency is a multi-faceted program involving several classes at a school concluding with final performance over the course of a month. This program takes place in a classroom setting and includes 4 WindSync classes (for 50 students or less) that delve into musical themes and each are in depth discussions of musical ideas in line with the fine arts standards from the TEKS. Each class also comes with a follow up 45 minute lesson plan for the normal classroom teacher to do with the students to follow up. To conclude the residency, the final concert includes all of the TEKS fine arts standards discussed in the classes. In the performance, students from the in-depth classes will help teach the rest of the school about these concepts, cementing them and creating a deep appreciation and thorough understanding of the musical ideas discussed throughout the whole school.
WindSync meets T.E.A Fine Arts Standards:
Class 1- Physicality (how does the music make you move) - Create dance to the music
Repertoire Selection, Jaques Ibert, Trois Pieces Breves
Class 2- Storytelling in music (What images and stories can we create from music)- draw scenes/ pictures to represent what we hear
Repertoire Selection, David Maslanka, 3rd Woodwind Quintet
Class 3 – Rhythm, structure and history - explore/ create rhythms together as a class
Repertoire Selection, Paquito D’Rivera, Aires Tropicales/ Gary Shocker, Chorinho
Class 4 - Characters of the instruments
Repertoire Selection Magic flute, show pieces etc.
Recordings of the pieces will be provided to the teachers of the class to play for the students after WindSync's presentation. Each group will then have a fun assignment related to the recording which can be completed in class. These other sessions take no longer than an hour and can be done by the classroom teachers.
Final Performance- The music that students dissected in each class will then be put together in the form of a fun concert lasting approximately an hour and a half which additionally includes a school wide question and answer. In the concert, the students who participated in the activity preparation will help to relay what they learned to the rest of the school when their respective pieces are performed. This way, the students have the experience of actually teaching their peers.
